She sits with her back reclined against a corner in a dark and drafty room. The paint is peeling from it's walls and she wears nothing but a white gown. Her world is not for the wary, for the week of heart or for those who cannot fathom the truths of life's reality.
You look in on her in amazement through the small wired window in the door, wondering how someone such as she could pen such work. She barely seems alive though you know she is because she just caught you staring at her. You divert your eyes, embarrassed but you don't know why so you look again. She smiles at you and your fears of speaking to her subside.
Entering into the darkness she dwells within you move slowly and cautiously toward her. She doesn't make a sound but follows you with her eyes like a lion follows it's prey in motion. There's a lone fold up chair in the center of the dingy white room waiting for you. You sit down wondering what to say to her.
Relieved, she speaks first, "Welcome to my world." Her voice not at all what you expected, it was soft and tender, warm and embraceable. You look around at what she has determined to be her place, you wonder could you help her escape.
She startles you. "I cannot leave, not today." She fidgets with the lace along the bottom of her gown, now unable to look at you.
"Why?" You ask her in almost a whisper.
She stares up at you, her eyes welling with tears, "Because I am safe here, sometimes."
"Safe from what?" You ask her.
"Safe from life."
She answers you as though you had just ask a question you already knew the answer to. You want to reach out and hold her but you are afraid to so you just sit silently with her hoping she will speak again.
